Most of the studies correlated academic strands and GWA to the overall performance of students in tertiary education and with this, the researchers focused on the correlation of the two variables and the said field of study, enumerating the different courses therewith. The main objective of the study is to determine whether or not academic strands and GWA have a relationship to the performance of AB Political Science students in their major courses, exemplifying also the effectiveness of Senior High School Education. this study. Statistical analysis showed that GWA has a weak to moderate and significant relationship to the performance of the aforementioned students in their major courses. However, academic strands correlated to the same variable has no significant relationship. In summary, although the performance of these students is generally high, only the GWA has a significant contribution to student's achievement.

Key findings suggest that more studies should be conducted to really measure student's performance in this field. The results also suggest that the government should be aware of the fact the senior high school education is not good enough and shall make drastic measures to improve the quality of education here in the Philippines.
