Thesis (B.S.) -- Cagayan State University, 2025.

Landfilling is one of the most common solid waste management techniques being used in managing waste production and disposal. With the growing volume of waste production, landfilling practices are being challenged with various concerns that pose potential harm to its surrounding community, particularly the workers and residents around the landfill. This study aims to assess different factors that may affect the landfill's surrounding community, particularly on its physical/chemical, biological/ecological, and economic/operational aspects. In this study, the researchers identified several factors under the above-mentioned aspects and employed the use of Rapid Impact Assessment Matrix (RIAM) to assess the severity of each factor's effect towards the surrounding community. The findings in the study reveals that the landfill workers suffer considerable negative consequences from noise and odor, whereas residents living within a 200-meter radius reported negligible effects related to physical/chemical parameters like dust, noise, odor, and water quality. From a sociological perspective, workers experienced moderate benefits concerning public health which means that they felt strong appreciation in terms of job opportunities. Residents had a bit of concern about health and in the sociological aspect, there was the broader understanding among the residents that the landfill was not harmful and seen as a resource for income, regarding health there was much less concern. Economically, workers perceived favorable effects on recycling and safety, although with differing perceptions of safety. There were perceived minimal effects on land value and traffic by residents, with some even seeing an increase in land value near to the site.
