The structural integrity of roofing systems is pivotal in maintaining the overall resilience and functionality of residential buildings, especially in typhoon-prone regions like Tuguegarao City, Philippines. This study investigates the structural integrity and typhoon resistance of steel roofing systems in selected houses within the city. Employing STAAD Pro software, the research analyzes various steel roofing configurations, focusing on two-story residential houses with gable and shed type roofs, and assesses their performance under different wind load scenarios typical of typhoons. The findings indicate that shed-type roofs with overhangs are particularly vulnerable to intense wind pressures, with failure points identified at overhang extensions. Conversely, shorter overhangs demonstrate enhanced stability, suggesting their preference for improved structural resilience. Gable roofs, on the other hand, generally outperform shed roofs under high wind speeds, particularly in Exposure Category C, though they require additional reinforcement at the top chords to ensure adequate performance. The study underscores the critical impact of meticulous design considerations, including the strategic distribution of material thickness and the incorporation of sufficient reinforcements. These measures are essential to enhance the durability and typhoon-resistance of steel roofing systems in high-wind environments. The research contributes valuable insights for architects and engineers in optimizing roofing designs to mitigate the adverse effects of typhoons, thereby promoting safer and more sustainable housing in vulnerable regions. Future research should explore alternative overhang designs and materials to further enhance the structural integrity of steel roofing systems under diverse environmental conditions.
