Summary, etc This study explores the mechanical properties of Engineered Bamboo Beams (EBB) produced from Dendrocalamus asper as a means of evaluating their viability as structural materials for sustainable construction. Laminated bamboo specimens with grain orientation both parallel and perpendicular were produced and their compressive, tensile, shear, and flexural strength were tested. These were compared with identical sized mahogany wood specimens. The tests revealed that EBB had high mechanical strength with tensile strength of up to 119.3 MPa, compressive strength of up to 57.7 MPa, flexural strength of 104.9 MPa, and shear strength of 9.8 MPa. Compared to engineered bamboo, mahogany fared similarly or better in most tests, especially tensile and flexural strength. Grain orientation influenced compressive strength significantly with parallel-oriented specimens registering better performance. Failure modes were also studied, which showed ductile behavior of EBB under tensile and bending loads. Based on the study, engineered bamboo is found to be a competent structural material that showed enough strength and durability to replace the conventional hardwoods. Its sustainability, low cost, and environmental advantages mean it could be a good alternative for the conventional construction of today, particularly where there is an abundance of bamboo resources in the area. Additional study on standardization and wider-scale use is suggested to enable wider adoption.
